There are two programs I open when I sit down to program. One is Visual Studio <whatever version> and the other is Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio, hereinafter known as SMS, I hate to type.
I chose Arvixe because they offer unlimited databases AND remote access. I use SMS all the time as I'm sure you do also to manage your db's.
What I found was that SMS checks permissions on all the db's on that server whenever you expand that node in explorer. As more and more people add db's to the server the wait for this was becoming VERY long. So how can you shorten this time down so you can get to work?
It's actually quite simple.
First open SMS and log into your account.
Second from 'View' choose 'Object Explorer Details'
THIS IS GOING TO TAKE A WHILE DON'T PANIC!
Once it gets done showing you all the various bits of info on EACH db we are going to turn everything but the name field off. This is where you pick up the speed. Don't worry, everything you do in SMS is still available.
Right click on the header field where it says name etc. A dropdown list will appear with various fields checked.
UNCHECK everything but name.
Close Object Explorer Details
Now expand your db's. If you did everything correctly they should open almost immediately and you can start your day without the long wait.
